It was 1990 when it first "sunk in" for me. A book by Diane MacEachern, "Save Our Planet" exposed me to the truth. Conserving energy by turning out lights, recycling, and cleaning up liter was no longer enough. Very few people took environmental issues and warnings seriously because you rarely heard about them, even fewer knew that our planet was in peril—even back then. In today's media-driven society, news of our great earth's declining health is everywhere. The turmoil affecting our planet concerns us all. Our dependency on natural resources is something we share. That being the case, we can no longer sit back as individuals and expect others to carry the burden. We must all pitch in and do our part, however big or small. It all counts toward a larger whole...saving our planet.
What can you do? My number one piece of advice, check out your local book store. Books on the subject are abundantly available. Television programs set the ground work, while books allow it to "sink in." Books serve as a round-the-clock, multiple topic reference guide, with step-by-step instructions. Going solar for your home, natural cleaning solutions that won't harm the environment, you name it...it's in a book.
My second piece of advice comes from Ed Begely Jr. Yes, Ed Begely, Jr. "It's not enough to just recycle. You must buy recycled products. If you don't buy these products, recycling doesn't work!" Sounds simple, yet very profound, environmentally speaking. I mean, we all buy as much recyclables as we can...right? I do? Do I? Following a lengthy search of my home, I came up empty-handed! What! This can't be. I mean I recycle like my life depends upon it...yet I don't buy anything recycled! This will definitely change.
We can no longer use that worn-out, "it's never too late to begin" excuse. The facts support that "it is too late" right now! Pick up a book, watch a video, teach your children, whatever you do...do it today. As an intelligent and educated society, we must all strive to "MAKE PEACE WITH OUR PLANET."
Thanks so much for listening. Marie
